Cleaning your kitchen trash can is important for hygiene, odor control, and keeping pests away.
You’ll need:
Rubber gloves
Dish soap or all-purpose cleaner
Baking soda (for odor control)
White vinegar (for disinfecting)
Scrub brush or sponge
Hose or bucket of warm water
Old towel or paper towels
Remove the trash bag and dispose of it.
Take the can outside if possible (especially for larger or very dirty bins).
Rinse the inside of the trash can with a hose or by pouring warm water inside.
This loosens stuck-on food or residue.
Mix warm water + dish soap (or use an all-purpose cleaner).
Scrub the inside and outside of the trash can with a brush or sponge, paying attention to the bottom and corners where gunk collects.
Spray or wipe the trash can with a vinegar-and-water solution (1:1 ratio) or a disinfectant cleaner.
Let it sit for 5–10 minutes to kill bacteria and neutralize odors.
Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove soap and cleaner residue.
Wipe the can with an old towel or paper towels.
Let it air dry fully before putting in a new trash bag. Moisture can lead to mold or bad smells.
Sprinkle a little baking soda in the bottom of the trash can before inserting a new bag.
You can also use trash can deodorizer discs or charcoal filters if your lid has a compartment.
Weekly: Wipe the lid and rim (the parts that touch trash bags most often).
Monthly or as needed: Deep clean using the full process above, especially if there are spills, leaks, or odors.
✅ Tip: To prevent future mess, double-bag food waste or use bags that fit snugly, and clean small spills right away instead of waiting for a full scrub.
