Tips for brewing good coffee with a Moka pot

2023-09-15

Many people choose moka pots because they originally wanted to find an easier way to brew coffee than brewing by hand. However, they often produce bitter coffee that can only be drunk by adding milk to cover it up. In fact, when brewing in a moka pot, in addition to adjusting the particle thickness of the coffee powder, the ratio of water to powder, and whether to do some filling and pressing, there are also some tips to avoid those unpleasant bitter tastes.

It is necessary to choose fresh, high-quality coffee. Grinding it before brewing can better retain the complete flavor. There is no need to press, and it is ground to a grinding thickness similar to hand-brewed coffee (with high-temperature extraction, so it is not requires too fine a grinding).

Add boiling hot water to the bottom of the moka pot to shorten the heating time of the Moka pot, reduce the time for the coffee flavor to dissipate, and reduce the burnt and bitter taste, because the coffee powder will not be heated on the stove all the time.

When you hear that the water in the lower pot of the Moka pot has evaporated until only the sound of bubbles is left, you must quickly move it to a place without a heating source and use a wet rag to cool the lower pot to avoid continuous heating and pressure affecting the water left in the powder trough. The water is extracted, resulting in more bitterness in the coffee.

As long as you minimize the exposure of the coffee powder to the air and shorten the heating time of the Moka pot, you will find that the moment the coffee liquid flows out, you can obviously feel the aroma that is different from before, and you will have bright acidity and sweetness when drinking it.

However, no one can get started with any coffee appliance in a short time, not to mention that each coffee has different characteristics. Every time you brew, you need to continue to adjust and correct it in order to get close to the perfect cup of coffee in your mind. If you have a Moka pot, remember to get up early and make a good cup of coffee.
